  1. Hi Noah
  2.
  3. I was listening to a recent episode of Ask Noah (not sure of which
  4. exact episode it was) where a listener called in and asked Noah how to
  5. fix tearing during video playback. Like me, the listener was running
  6. Ubuntu MATE and they were using an Intel GPU. I too have noticed I
  7. suffered from video tearing when playing videos with mpv under Ubuntu
  8. and I had noticed this same laptop and display didn't suffer tearing
  9. when I played 4K vids under Windows 10, when I had to install it once.
  10. Noah advised the listener to "run, not walk" to return his machine to
  11. Dell as he suspected it was a hardware fault.
  12.
  13. As it turns out, tear free video playback is disabled by default for
  14. Intel GPU users under Ubuntu (MATE) 18.04, as well as earlier
  15. releases. To enable it, the user must create a /etc/X11/xorg.conf file
  16. like this:
  17.
  18. Section "Device"
  19.    Identifier  "Intel Graphics"
  20.    Driver      "intel"
  21.    Option      "AccelMethod" "sna"
  22.    Option      "TearFree" "true"
  23. EndSection
  24.
  25.
  26. Using this X config gives me tear-free 4K h264 video playback with mpv
  27. under Ubunti MATE 18.04. Please forward this onto Noah.
  28.
  29. I hope that helps,
  30.
