  1. In a recent episode a listener was asking about low cost managed switches. I recommend giving a try to Mikrotik's network gear. Mikrotik is a big name in Europe (the company is from Latvia), I used many of their routers at home and in enterprise environment as well.

  4. I have a US market Mikrotik RB951 [$45] at home for two years, so far with no issues at all. It has a lot of features, perhaps a home user will never user all of them: https://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:RouterOS_features

  6. It takes some time to learn using it but isn't very different, it is manged like any other professional network device. It can be access via ssh, web and their own software (runs on Windows but easily can be ported to OS-X).
