The issue I see with Ubuntu's decreasing compatibility with other Linux distributions is the fact that certain proprietary software is being packaged specifically for it being the most popular distro (e.g. Steam, Lightworks). This is a problem for anyone not running Ubuntu who uses these applications because if Ubuntu diverges far enough they will no longer be compatible with the distribution of your choice.
  3. p.s. aufs isn't a copy-on-write filesystem. It's a unioning filesystem.
