  1. To get newer apps on a stable base like CentOS or Ubuntu, which typically don't update app versions until the next release. Its a lower level of friction than hunting down PPAs and backports.

  3. I believe Gentoo, and NetBSD's package manager have tried to bring the same thing to Linux distributions as well, but I haven't had much luck with it.
